Going green from your dorm room can be as easy as using one search engine over the other.  Think about how often you use Google.com.  Think about all the white that appears on screen and how much power you use every time you’re on Google.  Well luckily we have a solution.

Blackle.com is just like Google, it is powered by Google, and gives the same search results as Google, with out the energy use.  Just a simple thing that you can do from your dorm to help save some energy!

My Freshman Dorm!

My Freshman Dorm!

Seeing as how this is the focus of my entire blog, I figured a post would be appropriate.  I also thought it would be good to highlight other sites that have a ton of useful tips.  But I will try to provide a little Cardinal flavor to my advice for everyone in the 502 area code.

The Link: Planet Green

Planet Green is an awesome site with tons of tips and information.  Their main idea for college students is to ‘use the used’.  Buy cheap used stuff and make it your own.  What a great idea!  Get all sorts of cool stuff for cheap, and then personalize it.  They say to check out virtual and physical sites like Craig’s List, eBay, Freecycle Network, and Local Thrift Stores.  Check out the site for more info!

Sustainable Steve’s Tip:  Free Food, Not Free Trash!

In my college experience, I’ve spent more time waiting in line for free food than I’ve spent studying.  The University of Louisville is a hotbed for free food.  The Interfaith Center has Free Lunch Wednesdays and dinner after Mass, Sundays at 5pm.  The Honors Student Council has free lunch every other week.  Not to mention all the random free food that happens at the Red Barn.  My point is this: Next time you’re hording free food on campus, try to use less paper.  I know the instinct is to grab a plate, then grab food.  But next time, try just getting a napkin if you’re not going to be that messy.  Just something simple that can save a lot of trash.
